Party in the Park

Carlos Bulosan Book Club

Detail: This Fall Term PSU Kaibigan will be reading “America is in the Heart” by Carlos Bulosan. This autobiography of the well-known Filipino American poet, writer, and labor rights activist describes his boyhood in the Philippines, his voyage to America, and the struggles of Filipino American migrants of the 1930s era. Book club will be meeting twice a month this Fall Term, and books will be provided to the first 10 students who sign-up. Filipino American history 101

October 15 (Thursday); 5:30-6:30pm; SMSU 333

Details: October is National Filipino American History Month. Come and attend this interactive workshop for an introduction to Filipino American history. Mel Orpilla once wrote “Know History, Know Self. No History, No Self” Unknown to many people, Filipino American history began on October 1587. Political Workshop discussion/ Film showing

October 22 (Thursday); 5:30-6:30pm; SMSU 228

Details: Stay tuned for an interactive film and discussion in collaboration with PCHRP: Portland Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines. Past film and discussion events have focused on the Stop the Killings in the Philippines Campaign as well as the struggles of millworkers, farm workers, and people of Hacienda Luisita. KAPATID Launch Day

Details: Kapatid (means sibling in Tagalog) is the outreach and mentorship program of PSU Kaibigan that connects Filipino & Filipino American high school students within the Portland metro area (including the high school siblings of Kaibigan members) to PSU and PSU Kaibigan. Kaibigan members if you got any siblings, relatives, friends,  in high-school or know anyone in high-school please invite them to this day long event that will include Fun Icebreaker Games, Filipino Identity Workshop, and a tour of the PSU campus. Political Workshop

Details: Join us for an interactive workshop that explores the governmental structure of the Philippines and gives a brief preview of the upcoming Philippine Presidential Elections in May 2010. Come find out who to expect as the 2010 Presidential frontrunners and what will be some of the country’s key campaign issues. Come prepared to learn and find out how your participation in the political process can make a difference. Free food and refreshments! Details: Come and see the talents Portland has to offer! The Kaibigan Showkase is our annual talent show where we exhibit the many skills of talented Filipino and Non-Filipino performers. Not only do we showcase our local talents, but we also have our surprise headlining performers! Well known on youtube, and by many Filipinos alike our headliner is one of a kind. Cultural Workshop Trip to the Philippines

December 2 (Wednesday); 5:30-6:30; SMSU 228

Details: It’s the season of joy and giving and who doesn’t love Christmas.  Come join us for a workshop trip to the Philippines to experience how the special holiday and festivities are celebrated and the traditions many of us grew up with in a Filipino family.  Food will be provided while we enjoy the company of other Kaibigan’s and designing our very own parol, ornamental star Christmas lanterns from the Philippines.  Take an hour off from studying and join us!
