KAIBIGAN

Okay so before I get to explaining the upcoming event this week which as you can probably tell from the title  involves dances, oh yea traditional filipino dances to be more exact, I’m going to take a a little detour.  So who watched the Blazers’ game last night against Golden State? I mean c’mon, what was up with all the foul calls against the Blazers huh?  And that referee at the end getting the call wrong against Rudy with like 4 secs left, which definetly affected the game outcome, and still had the nerve to give Rudy a techinical, what!?!  Even though my Blazers didn’t get the W, my man Oden got his second double-double 22-10 and another career high night in only his 5th game of his career, step off doubters, LOL .   Okay okay sorry about that rant, now back to business at hand.  Anyway this Thursday 11/20, Kaibigan is putting on a workshop that’s all about the many wonderful traditional dances that the Phillipines has to offer, from Maglalatik, Tinikling, Pandanggo Sa IIaw, and Dugso.  So join us for a fun and relaxing meeting where we will travel to the different part of Phillipines and learn how the history and movements of these intricate dance came about.  Its also a chance to get involve and get ready for Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN) in May.  I know its still quite a ways away but it doesn’t hurt to get started early .  You don’t need any dance experience, i sure didn’t have any last year but i got through it, lol.  Food and refreshment will be provided so come have fun and learn something new.  As always, its gonna be in SMSU 294 from 5-6 so be there this Thursday.

Greeting friends,

Wow can you guys believe there only like a month left until the term is over?  Where has all the time gone?  Mine has been spent in the Kaibigan’s office…its my home away from home , everyone should stop by and hanging out in there with us officers.  Hope everyone did great on their midterm, I did wayyy better than I thought I did so I’m quite happy but definitely glad that it’s over for now and ready for the holidays.  Speaking of end of the term, this Thursday the 13th, its our last general members meeting for the term until winter term comes around.  Its gonna be in Smith 294 from 5-6 so be sure to plan out your day on Thursday so that you have time to stop by and join in all the fun.  Irynne, Kaibigan’s president this year has loads of fun games planned for the meeting as a way for all of us to get to know each other better and also just as a way to relax after midterms week last week.  The games are way fun as some of our officers have played some of them in our weekly ExecBoard meeting so trust me when I say they are FUN!!!  Hope to see everyone there.

Don’t forget there is a Filipino American History 101 Workshop this Thursday, Nov. 6th from 5-6 pm in SMSU room 294.  There’s lots of free food, so please join us.

Its an interactive and informational workshop put together by this year Kaibigan’s President Irynne Padua with the help of Kaibigan’s newest Educational Chair Justin Katigbak.  They will be going over Filipino American history and influential Filipino-American people/activists/writers/etc.

Hey KAIBIGANS and FRIENDS!!!

PSU Kaibigan is proud to present our first 2008 PSU KAIBIGAN T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST and we invite YOU to participate!!! We need to discover the next amazing Kaibigan T-Shirt and the winning design could be YOURS! Come help us shape up the 2008-2009 school year by helping us come up with our official Kaibigan T-Shirt design for the year! We are accepting designs from November 2nd until November 13th!!!

Got great theme ideas? Like to draw? Are you good with graphic design? Are you an aspiring designer? Got Kaibigan / FASA LOVE? This contest is for YOU!

T-SHIRT DESIGN CRITERIA:

-The shirt artwork MUST relate to Kaibigan’s mission: to unite and empower Filipino American students at PSU through educational, political, cultural, and social activities while celebrating the Filipino American experience. Have fun with it, be funny, be expressive, convey a powerful message, make it captivating, think outside the box….do anything you want but it has to relate to Kaibigan.
-The artwork must be appropriate and of original content.
-You are limited to 1-2 colors (sorry, budgetary reason!).
-This artwork will be used for general Kaibigan promotional purposes (logo for fliers, posters, etc). Please submit your artwork with high resolution quality as a jpg or pdf.

SUBMISSIONS:

Please e-mail your design to Kaibigan at kaibigan@pdx.edu. The deadline is: November 13th, Thursday, at the 3rd Kaibigan General Meeting by 5pm.

PRIZES:

-The winner of this contest will have their own art work / design publicly recognized by Kaibigan and printed on this year’s Kaibigan T-Shirts and Hoodies as well as our promotional materials.
-There will be an awesome prize (to be announced). It will be amazing. We promise.

Watsup my Kaibigan Peeps,

Thanks for all your support and help at the Kaibigan Showkase. It wouldn’t have been a huge success without your support and love! That was a crazy Backstreet Boys performance, I didn’t think they were all that great but supposedly they had their own groupies/fans…that was unexpected. LOL

Anyway this coming weekend, that’s right, this Saturday is the third annual FilipinOlympics hosted by the Kuyas so let us continue the FUN and EXCITEMENT this Saturday! We need all of you to come and represent PSU Kaibigan at this friendly competition to show to the whole Pacific Northwest which school has the most spirit, pride, and unity!! This week is your last chance to sign-up and reserve your seat for the trip that will be going to represent PSU Kaibigan at FilipinOlympics.

Anyway here’s the lowdown of the event:

Saturday, November 1, 2008 (all day)
Mercer Island Park
Seattle, WA

Who: All Kaibigan Members are highly encouraged to attend to represent PSU!!
Time: We will be leaving PSU this Saturday, Nov. 1 @ 5:00am and return to Portland late Saturday evening.
Cost: FREE for Official Kaibigan Members (Transportation Included)

Or sign-up at the Kaibigan General Meeting this Thursday @ 5:00pm in SMSU 295

SIGN UP TODAY BECAUSE SEATS IN THE VANS ARE FILLING UP FAST!!!

You’re not required to play in all of the games. Pick the only ones you’re interested in participating in. The games will test the schools in their school spirit, athletic ability, teamwork, ingenuity, and knowledge.

Here are some FilpinOlympics games that we will be playing

1. Cock Fight
1. Teams will be separated into 5 groups of 2; each pair from a team will compete in a separate “fight”.
2. Each player will be required to hold onto a rope to restrict hand playability making the elbows similar to wings.
3. Each player will have Velcro attached to both elbows.
4. Each player will also have a “feather” ribbon belt attached around the waist.
5. Each player must detach their opponents’ “feathers” using their elbows.
6. The player/s left standing in each of the five blocks (5 “fights”) will compete in the championship
7. Champion round will be a battle royale bout between winners of each block.
8. Teams cannot stand back to back to protect the tail!
9. Points system will be explained by officials.

2. Barrel Man Race ( This one is really really fun…trust me)
1. Two teams will race at a time.
2. Competing teams will be drawn randomly.
3. Five members from each team will be at the halfway points.
4. The first member from each team, wears the “barrel” and must run half a lap to the second team member.
5. At that point, the “barrel” must be passed onto the next runner in order for s/he to continue the race.
6. Teams must complete 5 laps, placement will be determined via time.

3. Lumpia Race
1. Players will need to create a lumpia roll with ingredients provided.
2. The first player must go through the lumpia-making stations one by one.
3. Then the player must run to the “fryer”, drop off the lumpia roll and spin 6 times.
4. The player must run back to tag the next member of their team and repeat in a relay fashion.
5. Placement will be determined by most lumpia made within time allotted.

AND SO MUCH MORE GAMES THAT I DON”T KNOW ABOUT!!!!

5. Spirit Award!!!
1. A spirit award will be given to the organization that displays the most spirit. (Brush up on your school chants and cheers!)
2. Spirit points will be awarded randomly throughout the day.

Hey Friends,

Just as a friendly reminder, Kaibigan has its 2nd General Member Meeting this upcoming Thursday (10/30/2008).  This one is kinda special in that its part general meeting and part workshop.  Ate Claire will be conducting a workshop on economic issues facing Filipinos in Portland and of course refreshment will be provided so come join us.  Just click on the poster for a cool little action it does and of course for more information concerning the meeting.  Take care guys.

Hey, its such a nice weekend that we are having, hope everyone is outside enjoying it.  So with ShowKase coming really soon, like in 2 weeks our publicity coordinator, also known as Jae has created a really cool promo video for the event.  Jae spent a lot of time on this video this past week so I hope everyone like it, I did especially the cool theme song.  Anyway enough waiting, here is the video.
